Very good Thai food at very reasonable prices to be had at Basel Back Pack’s own mük dam restaurant and take-away (192, Dornacherstrasse).

A place with events ranging from live music to DJs to theatre is Kaserne at Klybeckstrasse 1b.

Eo ipso, hip bistro bar at Dornachstrasse 192 (next to Basel Back Pack), serves lunch at reasonable prices. Good atmosphere till midnight weekdays, Fri. and Sat. till 2am.

Bar rouge is Basel’s highest bar (31st floor) with the most spectacular toilets (a real view from the 30th floor!), at Hotel Ramada at Messeplatz.

Brauerei Fischerstube at Rheingasse 45 brews its own beer.

Unser Bier at Laufenstrasse 16 (just 10 minutes from the Basel Back Pack) is a brewery as well and has pub evenings on Thurs and Fridays.

A good place to meet people is Unternehmen Mitte at Gerbergasse 30.

Nice bars are Grenzwert at Rheingasse 3 and Cargo Bar at St.Johanns-Rheinweg 46.

Elle et Lui at Rebgasse 39 and Cupido (next to Elle et Luis) are Basel’s best gay bars.

A nice anarchic place is Hirscheneck at Lindenberg 23 (also close to Elle et Lui) with live music or disco (new punk) most Fri and Sat. Brunch every Sun from 9 am till 2 pm, CHF19.- and you don’t need to eat for the rest of the day!

Bird’s Eye Jazz Club at Kohlenberg 20. Quality jazz.

Kuppel at Binningerstrasse 14 is like a huge igloo. Different style of music each night. Just behind it are Aqua (good food and lounge music) and Anex (electro and house music).

Blinde Kuh at Dornacherstrasse 192 (next to Basel Back Pack) offers dining in utter darkness. It’s a special experience indeed to sit and dine in this completely dark restaurant (the people serving you here are blind).

Das Schiff on Westquaistrasse 19 is a ship at dock with an excellent restaurant, disco and chill out music till 5am.

Youngsters go to the Sommer Casino (SoCa for short), at Münchensteinerstrasse 1 for concerts, raves and parties.

Ask at the tourist office for the brochure ; there you get full listings.
